Ed de Giles' Blog

Past our target of 20 winners for 2014 and onto 24 so far!

It's been a very long time since my last blog but you have not been without information flow as the tweets have flowed! I do keep getting a few disgruntled followers that my blog has dried up so now I have a quiet couple of days to get back blogging!

Zugzwang has been in great form for the second half of the season. We stepped him up in trip at Lingfield and he obliged. We then returned to the scene of the crime in a competitive race and he was beaten a head by a very good Stoute horse. Then on to Chester he was beaten a head again in a very competitive race. Had the ground been quicker I am sure we would have won! The handicapper has taken a strong view and put him up 6lbs to 85! I am sure he can win off that mark and may well return to Chester next week ground pending!

Marengo won in the mud at Chepstow and I was sure he could follow up at Kempton next time over a bit further, but he ran no sort of race. He scoped clean before the race but has since scoped dirty. I am not blaming that but I am sure the horse is better than we saw at Kempton.

Mr Frankie had his first run for us and him the other day at Wolverhampton. What a great start he has made finishing 3rd behind two nice horses. He was very green to begin with but gradually got his act together with an eyecatching finish. He has come on for that run. He is a lovely big horse and can only improve next year. He will probably head back to Wolves next week.

Weekendatbernies put his Kempton run behind him at Sandown, quite rightly so as he had very valid excuses, missing the break and coming up the slower inner! He then ran another cracker at Epsom finishing 3rd. Had he not got unbalanced at the close I am sure he would have won. He has gone up 3lbs for that so I will run him at Newbury in 0-80 as he will now be out of that band going forward.

Good old Croq yet again supplies us with more winners. He battled well at Sandown to land the spoils but unsurprisingly didn't quite perform at Haydock. The ground was not quick enough and he was hassled for the lead but he soon put that right, returning to Bath to lift the trophy he won last year. A great ride by Freddie - you would laugh if you knew the conversation we had in the paddock before hand but I won't go there!! I am not sure where we go next with him but would like to squeeze one last run into him. I have been thinking that a try at Wolves or Lingfield might not be a bad idea. His all-weather form is poor but its always been early in the season and he doesn't fire until he has had a few runs .Anyway something to mull over.

Hostile Fire has been a revelation this year notching up 4 wins. We were unlucky at Newmarket to run into one and he had no run whatsoever at Haydock where he would, I am sure, have won. He made amends at Thirsk yesterday given a peach of a ride by James. I am toying with sending him to Chester next week but there will be plenty of options before the season is finished as he would appreciate some cut. The race next week is a big step up in class and he may not get in but would have done last year so we will make an entry.

Bernie as I said probably goes to Newbury on Saturday.

I might run Wind in my Sails on Monday at Kempton. I love this horse and he is going to make a great 3yo. I have not been hard on him so what ever he does on Monday he will only improve. If you get a chance have a look at him in the paddock he brings a smile to my face every morning on the gallops.

Caught on the Bid may run a week tomorrow. He is a lovely looking horse but is a Footsteps that has inherited the buzzy trait from his sire. He has ability but I don't expect to see that until next year. His name is an old stock market term just in case you were wondering if there was a more sinister meaning to it!!!

We came home with 3 new yearlings from DBS the other day, they have all settled in very well. They don't know how lucky they are to be at Hotel Lilly Hall or maybe they do!  I am heading to Ireland next week for the Tatts September Sale to try and fetch a few more home.

I have to get on now but hopefully that is enough of a taster for you! I will write again soon if only to stop Claire from nagging me to write!
